For those of you lovely human beings that follow me on Instagram, you probably saw on my story last week that I finally went home to Kansas City to visit my parents/take a little vacay. For anyone that has been away from their home/parents for more than 5 months, you know it sucks. Sometimes you want to just sit on the couch with your parents and binge watch Bloodline, you know? Luckily, I was able to take a few days off work and took a long weekend.
Not only did I get to see my parents and my cat (v important, obviously), but I got to see some high school friends, which was so much fun! (Even though the bars in the Kansas City suburbs aren’t exactly as great as Fort Worth’s selection.)
When I had the idea for this blog post, my sweet sweet mother was more than willing to adventure with me. Not only would we get to spend some good time together, but we’d get to explore our city while we did it! And can we talk about how amazing her photography turned out?! You’d think she was the photographer, not my brother (and he didn’t even ask me to link his website!!!! I’m such a good sister). But for real, huge praise to my patient and artistic mother.
But now on to what you really want: the best places to Instagram in Kansas City!
The Wings at Fortuity
1919 Baltimore Avenue
That’s right, y’all. First there was Los Angeles. Then there was Nashville. Well now there’s Kansas City. The first step to every iconic city is having a “wing wall” to pose in front of right?! Well shout out to Fortuity for providing this dream to every basic girl (myself included) in Kansas City.
Kansas City I’m So In Love
1919 Baltimore Avenue
This one is probably my favorite. I love how simple the mural is, but it truly portrays how people feel about Kansas City. It just happens to be an added bonus that it’s written in Royals blue.
R E L A T E D: My Kansas City Staycation
But you know what’s even better than those two murals?! The fact that they’re both on the same wall! That’s right. Both The Wings and Kansas City I’m So In Love are painted on the side of the Fortuity building. What this means is if you can’t get the perfect Instagram at one, you can simply try the other! Easy as pie.
1740 Main Street
This mural is a bit more large-scale and a tad more difficult to get to, but it is certainly worth the ‘gram. Located on top of the Barkley parking garage (I avoided the $5 fee by parking on the street then taking the elevator up hehe), this mural is absolutely massive. I feel like this would be so cool to take wedding pictures in front of (you know, if you’re a die-hard Kansas Citian) or even senior pictures. (PS- the rocket is Barkley‘s logo!)
The World War I Museum
2 Memorial Drive
I know what you’re probably thinking. Emma, this isn’t a museum. And to that, my friend, I would say you’re wrong. This view is actually from the top of the World War I Museum. But because the museum is built into a hill, you can actually walk directly to it, without any annoying entrance fees or climbing too many stairs. This spot is popular for proposals, prom pictures and senior pictures, so why not get a ‘gram in too?! I absolutely love this view of the city. You can see all of the iconic spots from the Kauffman Center, to Union Station and even the Western Union sign. If you’re looking for the perfect panorama, this is your spot.
2492 Southwest Blvd
Anyone who’s anyone knows Kansas City is a baseball town. Our boys in blue won the World Series in 2015 and we definitely haven’t let anyone forget about it. With the success of the team has come a huge uprising of Kansas City spirit, but more specifically Royals spirit. This mural is actually one of five Royals murals across Kansas City, as part of the 2017 Mural Program. How cool is that?! But why did I choose this mural specifically? Because it’s next to the Boulevard Brewery of course. Go grab yourself a beer and celebrate with an Instagram by this beautiful mural.
I know, I know. You just want to know where these not-so-secret spots are! Well, I wanted to make it as easy as possible, so I made a little map with all of the spots pinpointed (in blue of course)! I even added a few extra spots you should definitely check out, which are indicated with the little orange pins! (And by the way, I was able to stop at all four of these spots in just about an hour or so, so they’re all very close to each other!)
Of course I couldn’t find shit online of what I was wearing, so I really did my best. The only thing I could find that I knew was 100% right were the slides which are such a steal and I absolutely love them (seriously, I wear them to work like, everyday). My new favorite sunglasses are sold out online, but I linked some similar ones for y’all. I also wore some gold aviators in some of the shots that are definitely men’s from Target that I bought before I went to Cabo last year, so it’s a lost cause in trying to find them online. The shirt I’m wearing is probably the softest piece of clothing I’ve ever put on my body and I got it on sale at Nordies (not part of their anniversary sale!). I know it’s TopShop, but I couldn’t find it online. Last but not least, I definitely bought the jean shorts at Target last week, so they’re most likely still there! They’re super stretchy and my butt cheeks don’t hang out, so I’d definitely recommend! Most importantly though, I got this 3-pack of hoop earrings at Nordstrom and I am obsessed. Hoops are my fave right now and it’s so great having so many options of sizes! Go buy this right this second!!
